Points strategy: earn the right points, then redeem above their Average value

Points & Prompts turns every card multiplier into a single number — cents back per dollar — by multiplying the earn rate by the verified value of the point it earns. A 3× card earning a 2.39¢ point returns 7.17¢ per dollar; a 2× card on a 1¢ point returns 2¢. The multiplier alone tells you almost nothing.

Earn

For every dollar you spend, the best card is the one with the highest cents-back — across a 21-card by 7-category matrix (dining, groceries, travel, gas, and more). The winner is rarely the flashiest sign-up bonus.

Use

Redeem points above their Average value and hold them below it. Transferable bank points are worth the most when moved to the right airline or hotel partner for a specific, already-priced award — never to "top up" a balance. A transfer is one-way and can halve a balance sent to the wrong program.

Activate

Card credits, transfer bonuses, and elite benefits only count if you actually use them. The highest-value transferable points today:

  • Aer Lingus AerClub — 3.73¢ per point (Airline)
  • Virgin Atlantic Flying Club — 3.47¢ per point (Airline)
  • Lufthansa Miles&More — 3.20¢ per point (Airline)
  • Iberia Avios — 2.86¢ per point (Airline)
  • Korean Air SkyPass — 2.86¢ per point (Airline)
  • Cathay — 2.82¢ per point (Airline)
  • Avianca LifeMiles — 2.81¢ per point (Airline)
  • American AAdvantage — 2.56¢ per point (Airline)

Every number traces to a published issuer earn structure or a verified Average-redemption value (verified August 13, 2026). Ask is on this site. Signed-out visitors get Instant Read (computed, not a model). Signed-in Ask uses the verified dataset. AI-generated answers are not financial advice.
